# PhD Research Fellowship (stipendiat) in Biology (Marine Biology)

# Two open positions in Evolutionary Genetics/genomics, at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Uppsala University.

These positions offers opportunities to explore a wide range of evolutionary paradigms, from the genomic consequences of selfing vs outcrossing, to the early steps in the evolution of sex chromosomes. Our research group uses the filamentous ascomycete genus Neurospora as a model system. Neurospora is well suited for studies on reproductive systems since its closely related species exhibit a wide spectrum of reproductive behavior. Furthermore, we use the mating-type chromosome of Neurospora tetrasperma as a simple, general, model for studies of the early evolution of sex chromosomes from autosomes. It shares features with the complex sex chromosomes found in the animal and plant kingdom, but is not affected by complex sex-biased evolutionary forces such as sexual selection and male biased mutation rate. The projects can be developed after the interest of the applicant, but should preferably involve large scale SNP-typing and/or high throughput sequencing of natural populations of Neurospora.

If you are interested, please contact me for more information.

# PhD-student: There is currently an opportunity to join the Jakobsson Lab as a PhD-student. The ideal candidate is interested in computational biology and population genetics, and interested in perusing a PhD in Evolutionary Genetics with focus on humans. The research will utilize tools from mathematics, computer science and statistics to understand the connection between demography and genetic variation in humans. To apply, send a description of your research interests and a CV to Mattias Jakobsson no later than April 15, 2009.

# Evolutionary Biology Center, Temporary field/lab assistance needed in the Laurila/Räsänen frog groups

We are looking for temporary assistance during our upcoming field season
(1-2 weeks end of March-mid April and a couple of periods during the
summer). Our work focuses on acid stress tolerance and adaptive maternal
effects of Rana arvalis (moor frog) and Rana temporaria (grass frog), and
field surveys of amphibian breeding sites. Temporary assistance is needed
for both lab and field work (e.g. jelly manipulation experiments in the lab
and sample collections in the field). The exact times depend on the progress
of the frog breeding season.
