Four PhD-student positions are available in a recently started research program, “Integration of biodiversity concern into production forests”, funded by the Swedish Research Program Formas; three in conservation biology (two at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU Uppsala, one at The Forestry Research Institute of Sweden, Uppsala) and one in landscape architecture (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU Alnarp). Conservation efforts in production forests include retention of living and dead trees at clearcutting to preserve biodiversity. The aim of our research program is to improve the understanding of the effects of such conservation efforts on the composition, function and dynamics of biodiversity, and also of how they are connected with human values and actions. Despite the retention of millions of trees during clearcutting every year, so far there have not been any large research programs dealing with this issue. Because we will increase the knowledge about ecological as well as societal factors our team is multi-disciplinary, with researchers in ecology, landscape architecture, remote sensing and political science. Representatives for forestry and conservation organisations are included as advisers. For the SLU positions see http://dokument.slu.se/ansti/taf/ledans_rd.taf?function=sluwebbakt <http://dokument.slu.se/ansti/taf/ledans_rd.taf?function=sluwebbakt> . Registration numbers 251-661/10, 251-662/10, 251-663/10. For the position at The Forestry Research Institute of Sweden, see www.skogforsk.se <http://www.skogforsk.se> .
